It will be a catalyst for innovation-led manufacturing across the Sheffield City Region (SCR) and Northern Powerhouse, attracting new international investors and generating an R&D revolution in the existing manufacturing base.
The AMID is a 2,000 acre centre of excellence in metals and materials manufacturing, located in Sheffield City Region adjacent the M1 Motorway. The area builds on SCR’s Enterprise Zone and houses many of the UK’s leading manufacturers, including Rolls Royce, Aloca, Tata, Outokumpu and Forgemasters. The AMID will be the place for leading manufacturers to go for research, technology transfer, production, networking and industrial collaboration.
We will create a place that draws in and develops world class people, a place where the world's leading companies come to explore new technologies and operating methods and deliver research and technology into the UK's supply and value chains. It will connect by mass transit (tram or tram-train) to the supporting professional, technical and services cluster in the City Centre.
The AMID will link the current Advanced Manufacturing Park and Sheffield Business Park, creating a central hub to the Innovation District. The Advanced Manufacturing Park has already seen a decade of development, propelled by the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and a growing cluster of advanced manufacturing and technology firms. The AMRC is now expanding the development of further transformational research facilities onto Sheffield Business Park with the building of Factory 2050 and the 50 acre AMRC 2 campus which has recently secured outline planning consent. The combined research campus will cover over 100 acres. The AMID will also encompass the new Advanced Wellbeing Research centre with Toshiba at the Olympic Legacy Park.
